Abstract


In this study, the crude Sanguisorba offrcinalis L. extract was examined for the effects on the growth and the adherence to hydroxyapatite beads by some mutans streptococci. The strains of mutans streptococci tested were S. mutans KCTC 3298, S. sobrinus KCTC 3307, S. cricetus KCTC 3292 and S. rattus KCTC 3294 strains. The results obtained were input SPSS/PC and analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Duncan test. The crude Sanguisorba officinalis L. extract inhibited the colony forming unit markedly at the concentrations of 0.25 mg/ml. The adherence to the saliva-coated hydroxyapatite beads of S. mutans KCTC 3298, S. sobrinus KCTC 3307, S. cricetus KCTC 3292 and S. mttus KCTC 3294 strains were inhibited by 24.3%,19.4%, 15.4%, and 8.6% in the crude Sanguisorba officinalis L. extract at the concentrations of 0.25 mg/ml (p < 0.05). The adherence to the saliva-coated hydroxyapatite beads of S. mutans KCTC 3298 and S. cricetus KCTC 3292 were inhibited 100% by the crude Sanguisorba officinalis L. extract at the concentrations of 2 mg/ml, and S sobfinus KCTC 3307 and S. rattus KCTC 3294 were inhibited 100% by the extract at the concentrations of 1 mg/ml (p < 0.05).
These results indicated that the crude Sanguisorba officinalis L. extract can be used as a possible anticariogenic agents.
